SUMMARY:“Writing True Crime: A National Obsession” Workshop
DESCRIPTION:“Writing True Crime: A National Obsession” Workshop \nDate and time: Saturday\, October 19 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. \nLocation: Pelham Parkway Van Nest Public Library \n2147 Barnes Avenue\, Bronx\, NY \nRegister at tinyurl.com/2s374c6z \n“Over the past few years\, true crime—that once-niche genre of storytelling that spins real-life crimes into entertainment—has become a national obsession.”\n-Phoebe Lett\, The New York Times \nKathryn Casey of the Boston Globe calls true-crime stories “the ultimate human dramas and the most terrifying horror stories. Such tragedies speak to us about the human condition in a different way—not as we wish it was but as we know\, and fear\, it can be.” \nWriting true crime presents a unique set of challenges. How does the author go about finding the right case? What research tools are available—and accurate? What ethical considerations need to be addressed? How should the narrative be structured? How much leeway does the author have when writing “creative nonfiction”? This workshop will address all of these questions and more\, guiding participants through the process of writing a compelling true-crime story. \nAuthor David Bushman will show attendees how to strive for criteria laid out by Michelle McNamara\, author of I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: “I love reading true crime\, but I’ve always been aware of the fact that\, as a reader\, I am actively choosing to be a consumer of someone else’s tragedy. So\, like any responsible consumer\, I try to be careful in the choices I make. I read only the best: writers who are dogged\, insightful\, and humane.” \nDavid Bushman is the author of five nonfiction books\, two on true crime: Murder at Teal’s Pond: Hazel Drew and the Mystery That Inspired Twin Peaks and Forget It\, Jake: It’s Schenectady: The True Story Behind “The Place Beyond the Pines.” He is a former TV curator at The Paley Center of Media\, TV editor at Variety\, and program director at TV Land. \nRegister at tinyurl.com/2s374c6z

SUMMARY:Yes! MWA University Returns! Virtual Webinars on or Around the First Wednesday of Each Month.
DESCRIPTION:The next session will be on Wednesday\, September 4th\, 8:00 p.m. NY time.  It will feature Daniel Stashower\, discussing setting.\nDaniel says: “Powerful settings have always been essential to the mystery story\, from Poe’s ‘rank sedges\, vacant eye-like windows and white trunks of decayed trees’ to I. S. Berry’s ‘noncontiguous streets\, noises without origin or purpose\, and angles that didn’t quite fit together.”’  As MWA Grand Master P.bD. James noted\, “Setting\, important in any work of fiction\, is particularly so in a detective story. It establishes atmosphere\, influences plot and character\,and enhances the horror of murder.”\nTo register or learn more information about past webinars\, visit this link:\nhttps://mysterywriters.org/mwa-literacy-programs/2024-mwa-university/

SUMMARY:Chapter meeting: Crime Craft (crime and sleuthing)
DESCRIPTION:This month’s CrimeCraft discussion will center on sleuths and sleuthing. Most (but not all) mysteries require some kind of sleuth to assemble information and clarify what happened. The sleuth can be a police officer\, private investigator\, lawyer\, reporter\, writer\, teacher\, librarian\, retiree—the list is endless. What makes a fictitious sleuth effective? Memorable? Unique? Loved or loathed? If you are a sleuth’s creator\, what did you consider when developing your character? Whom would you choose to portray your character on stage\, screen or television? Join the Zoom here. \nNote: CrimeCraft will resume in February and Spotlight meetings in March.
