MWA-NY Mentor Program closes April 1

The 2023 MWA-NY Mentor Program is open March 1 to April 1. We invite all members of the New York Chapter of MWA to submit their work.

One of last year’s mentees wrote: “(My Mentor) had some wonderful insights, questions and suggestions. Her advice is much appreciated. It will be extremely helpful in making my book more compelling, suspenseful and readable. I will send her a very nice thank you note next.”

This is a valuable member benefit. Here are the program essentials:

  • Submit the first 35 pages of a manuscript, or a short story up to 35 pages.
  • Your submission must be an example of a crime genre, such as cozy, traditional mystery, hardboiled, thriller, suspense, romantic suspense, noir or police procedural.
  • Submit by March 31, 2023, and pay a small cost to participate.
  • An active member of the New York chapter will provide constructive feedback in writing.

For a fee of $25, you may submit up to 35 pages of a novel-in-progress or a short story totaling 35 pages or less. A slightly shorter or longer submission is fine if a scene or chapter ends a few pages before or after the 35-page limit.

For novels, please add a synopsis of 500 words or less. If your novel is completed, the synopsis should describe the whole plot. For works in progress, just jot down what you know of the plot or where you think it’s going. Note: Only crime-related submissions will be accepted.

You will find detailed submission requirements and a link to the application on this website here.

Please follow the instructions carefully.

Refer to the chapter website for additional information about the program and e-mail mentors@mwany.org if you have questions.

We look forward to receiving your submissions!
